Fowey |
This historic town is not only renowned for its beauty its also busy commercial seaport, over the time Fowey has grown and now stretches for about mile along the west bank of the River Fowey to the mouth of the river.
On the opposite bank also at the mouth of the river is the village of Polruan, regular ferry connects these two places.
Fowey and surrounding area is designated as Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has much to offer to everyone, its natural harbor is heaven for yachtsmen and as many as 7000 yachts visits every season, its also popular destination for cruise liners. Its also wonderful place for long leisure walks although the footpaths maybe strenuous and there are long stretches without refreshment or facilities.
Tudor cottages, narrow winding streets beautiful views on the river and harbor enchant holidaymakers, many of whom choose Fowey over other locations year after year.
Fowey has very special ancient unspoiled charm and has been home for many famous people, Daphne du Maurier first came to Fowey in her early twenties and lived in Fowey together with her 3 children in 1943 while her husband was in the arm, many of her works were written there.
Places which are worth visiting
Saint Catherine Castle - built in medieval times this Saint Catherine Chapel used to act as Lighthouse to this day only fort remains which was build in the reign of Henry VIII to defend the harbor entrance.
Blockhouses - on each side of the harbor entrance are the ruins of square blockhouses build around 1380 between which chain was hung to prevent entry of undesirable ships into the harbor.
