Charles Town

Charlestown
This small harbor village before 19th century was known as West Polmear but during 1790-1810 a harbor was planned and built by local landowner Charles Rashleigh after whom it was renamed, for the purpose of exporting china clay and cooper.

All trough 19th century the port was busy and packed with small boats, harbor side warehouses, boat building, rope making and other complementary businesses. Smuggling was major income for some of the locals and wreckers lured unwary captains onto the rocks in the bygone age.
Even today it's still working port and small quantities of china clay are still exported by number of boats.

Leisure activities and attractions include pleasure boat trips, mackerel fishing, golf, horse riding, and visit to Shipwreck and Heritage Museum or simply strolling along the south coast path to admire its breathtaking views. Charlestown's Shipwreck and Heritage Museum is home for most fascinating collection of shipwreck artifacts and memorabilia in Europe.

This famous collection has been put together over past 50 years and includes memorabilia from stricken vessels such as Titanic and White Star Liners. There is also collection relating to Admiral Nelson which gives inside into the career and life greatest British Naval hero.
You can admire both indoor and outdoor exhibits, relax in nearby restaurant or shop in the well stocked gift shop.

The remarkable thing about Charlestown is that it largely escaped development and still remains steeped in history one of the finest places on the Cornish coast Not surprisingly it was used in number of major film productions and TV series.
